Nidhish Mekkunnel 07 October 2026

Welcome to our comprehensive breakdown of Ireland's Budget 2027! Packed with crucial announcements aimed at providing relief for everyday citizens and the middle class, this year's budget introduces significant changes to taxes, housing, social welfare, and education.

Here is everything you need to know about how the new budget impacts your wallet, in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

💶 Income Tax & Wages: More Money in Your Pocket

Reducing the tax burden on workers was a major priority this year.

  •  Higher Tax Threshold: The entry point for the higher 40% income tax rate has been raised by €2,500, moving it from €44,000 to €46,500.

  •  Boost in Tax Credits: Both the Personal Tax Credit and the Employee Tax Credit have been increased by €125 each. This gives working individuals a total extra relief of €250 per year.

  •  Minimum Wage Increase: The National Minimum Wage has gone up by 79 cents, bringing it to a new total of €14.94 per hour.

🏡 Housing & Support for Renters

Whether you are buying your first home or currently renting, the budget offers some expanded financial lifelines.

  • Help to Buy Scheme: The maximum benefit for first-time buyers has been bumped up by €5,000, now reaching a total of €35,000.

  •  Rent Tax Credit: Relief for renters has grown! The credit has been increased to €1,150 for individuals and €2,300 for couples.

  •  Rent-a-Room Relief: The tax-free limit for homeowners who rent out spare rooms—including backyard modular units—has also been expanded.

🛒 Social Welfare & Cost of Living Relief

To combat everyday expenses, the government has announced several supportive welfare measures.

  •  Weekly Benefits: Pensions and other primary social welfare payments will see a steady increase of €10 to €12 per week.

  •  Christmas Bonus: The beloved 100% double-payment Christmas Bonus will continue to be distributed in full this year.

  •  Targeted Assistance:

A €500 one-off payment for people with disabilities.

A €5 weekly increase in the Fuel Allowance.

The Living Alone Allowance has been raised to €25 per week.

(Note: The standard Child Benefit will remain at €140).

🎓 Childcare & Higher Education

Families and young adults have reason to celebrate with cuts to some of their biggest core expenses.

  • Childcare Caps: Full-time childcare fees will now be strictly capped at a maximum of €550 per month, easing the burden on working parents.

  •  Reduced College Fees: The undergraduate Student Contribution fee has been permanently reduced by €150, capping the cost at €2,350.

📌 Other Major Announcements

  •  Inheritance Tax (CAT): The tax-free threshold for inheriting property and assets from parents to children has been raised to €420,000.

  •  Tobacco & Vaping: The price of a packet of cigarettes is going up by €1, pushing many popular brands over the €20 mark. Additionally, a new excise duty of 20 cents per milliliter has been introduced for e-cigarette liquids (vapes).

  •  Fuel & Energy: Good news for homeowners—the planned carbon tax hike on Home Heating Oil has been scrapped, resulting in reduced overall rates.

  •  Healthcare: The government's free contraception scheme has been officially expanded to include women up to the age of 37.

Final Thoughts

Budget 2027 delivers a broad spectrum of changes meant to ease financial pressure on households across Ireland. Whether it’s through reduced taxes, childcare caps, or housing supports, these newly announced measures aim to make the cost of living a bit more manageable for everyone.
