Forty-nine people were arrested during a recent three-day cross-border operation targeting an organized criminal network that uses the Republic of Ireland as a transit point to smuggle individuals into the UK. The joint effort, known as "Operation Comby," involved extensive patrols across ports, roads, and rail networks throughout Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales.

Since its launch, Operation Comby has been a pivotal part of a broader crackdown. Since July 2024, enforcement actions in Northern Ireland alone have led to over 2,400 arrests, with nearly 1,000 individuals subsequently returned, approximately half of whom were sent back to Ireland. During this latest three-day pulse, authorities also seized half a million pounds in currency. In a related action at Belfast Port, officials intercepted £130,000 worth of counterfeit goods.

Among the specific incidents highlighted, two Romanian women were detained at Belfast International Airport after attempting to enter the UK illegally from Ireland. Further investigation revealed they were potential victims of human trafficking. Consequently, one was returned to Romania, while the other was sent back to Ireland.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has reaffirmed the government's commitment to combatting immigration crime, announcing plans to double the enforcement budget and recruit additional officers.

"There is nothing fair about a lack of control at our borders," Mahmood stated. "It is not fair that criminal gangs determine who comes to this country." Operation Comby, she noted, is a vital step toward restoring control and fairness to the immigration system.
